Film Identity (Ident or channel ID) is the logo a channel or film production has created to represent and identify them when aired and are typically seen based off of the channels name or company name and may also be a form of branding or licensing. Film Idents help the viewers to identify the channel they are currently watching. If they weren't used for this then these stations Idents would have little on-screen presence other than being placed at the bottom of the screen.

A lot of film idents created by the companies have chosen designs and colours that are both unique and begin to be associated with the company, idents such as 'Film 4' is a fixed design from the company and the logo and colours red and white are now a recognisable combination on all of the filmed made by the company.

Both red and white contrast one another, red being a bold colour that is highly recognisable, the white forming a crossed position that also represents the number four. The elongated shape of the four is also represented in the font of the company 'Film', the font also being in white, bold and elongated.

20th Century Fox has become an iconic ident for the company and has changed the filming company by producing successful films. This ident is shown at the beginning of every film the company has produced, and unlike static images the company has produced a short clip that shows a 3D image of the companies logo/ ident. In 2010 a new Ident was made to support the 75th anniversary of the company, the designers had produced a new and updated appearance following the same design as the iconic one previously. The Ident is of a gold statue or podium of the companies name, a dark sky behind it and a spot light lighting up the podium. The colours blue and gold are both rich and royal colours, contrasting with one other which enables the title of the company to stand out more.

The company LIONSGATE created a 0:21 second clip for their film Ident. The clip shows the camera moving backwards as cogs move to open a door exposing the companies name. The title 'Lionsgate' is shown with a light background, darkening the name of the company, white clouds opening around the back light. The connotations of clouds and bright light suggest innocence and 'Godly'.

I shot my entire music video within four arranged days. I decided to film across a range of days because each of these sections I filmed were different sections in my film. Both myself and my actor worked around each others time tables and on the days I needed to film the lake scene we chose a day where there was a clear sky and no rain. Overall, every shooting session was successful and I followed my narrative and clearly directed what I wanted to be done within each shoot.

After organizing the days with my actor, I informed him on what I wanted to film and the items of clothing I wanted him to bring with him (this was specific for the kitchen scenes where I had to re shoot him doing similar actions in different clothing to portray the changing days). Breaking up the days enabled me to create an organised structure that allowed me to follow my narrative in the best way possible.

After the first cut of my film I sent a link to my actor so he could see the process of the music video and the edited clips. Placing the footage in order and changing the saturation and colouring of the clips developed the quality of the film. Receiving my first lot of feedback from the actor who featured in my music video gave me an insight to what my music video looks like to an audience that hasn't seen it before. It also enabled me to place a higher achievement level to gain my intended audience interpretation.

In my forth shooting session for my music video I filmed all of the water scenes, this includes the shots of my actor in the forest, lake and bathroom. I used a variety of angles and shots to capture the movement of the water, the reflections of the trees on the lake and wide shots to capture my actor walking. In the first clip I capture an extreme close up of the bath water lapping over my actors body. The steady movement creates a slight rhythm and contrasts with the stillness of my actors body. The slight movement becomes the visual point for the audience because it grabs their attention as the  camera focuses on the edge of the water and the skin.
Giving the impression that my actor is naked follows through with the idea of nature and exposure. Throughout the music video the character experiences a series of mental health issues, this is also metaphorically addressed by the bare skin he shows, truly exposing his body and mind in the calmness and comfort water brings. The use of water becomes a symbolic reference in my music video because of the lyrics "there must be something in the water".

The bottom clip shows the character wiping away steam from a bathroom mirror. This is a metaphorical act as the character is wiping away the bad thoughts going through his mind, and attempting to clear it from the negative image he holds against himself.

Within the third shooting session with my actor I filmed the bathroom to kitchen and kitchen scenes. The footage I filmed for this shoot show the actor moving from the bathroom to the kitchen and then sitting at the kitchen table. I re shoot this last section with my actor changing tops and doing different actions to enable me, when editing, to overlay and distort the time sequence between the footage to express the repeated actions the character follows everyday. These two clips I used one after the other to connect the two locations (the bathroom and the kitchen) together.

When I edited these clips I minimized the warmth level, giving a cooler tint to the footage. This enabled the footage to fit in with the previously cool toned clips and enabled me to connote the mental health of the character. The first footage linked in this post is a mid shot of the actor leaving the bathroom and walking into the kitchen. The bottom clip is a low mid shot, capturing the actors hand reaching and opening the bathroom door. These two clips overlap and show the continuous movement of the actor walking.

Shoot 2

The second set of shooting featured the actor in a spot light. This shots featured static and slow movements that I will use to create fillers to contrast with the other clips in my final film. The narrative follows the characters day-to-day actions, these clips will create a more metaphorical meaning portraying the venerability of the male character and how he is truly feeling rather than the 'face' he shows to society.
Moving the light around his face created different shadows that highlight different parts of his face and implied a more hollowed affect in others. This also creates a more skull like effect, connoting references to death and depression.

The top clip is footage from when I tested the angles of the lighting so I knew what shots I wanted within the actual footage and the angles of light that would be relevant to this part in my film.
Using light and shadows as a section within my film creates a separation between the reality and the mask that my character puts on his face.

Shoot 1

Within my first shoot I wanted to capture the majority of one of the sections within my film. It shows the young man looking at himself in the mirror showing a double meaning. In a physical way, these clips could be showing him getting ready (creating a temporal reference point) and a more metaphorical and psychological level in trying to get rid off the self hate and differences he has against and towards other people.
I shoot a range of shots from close ups, dirty shots and low angle shots. Having a range of angles, while keeping to the rule of 180 degrees, provides a flow of movements to demonstrate the distress that the man is feeling.

The second clips shows the actor with his head against the mirror. This portrays the duel personality the man has, having to protect his facial needs, he hides his real feelings behind the one that society wants to see.

This topic of social expectation is something I wanted to address within my work and to create a subverted stereotype. The character who may support the struggle in finding emotions is normally perceived to be a female character, and with the recent upbringing of the lack of support given to men who may suffer from mental issues as they are perceived as the gender who don't, or shouldn't, struggle with their masculinity or place within society. By making a product that follows along the lines of perception and internal struggle, I wanted to show support towards this cause and to bring to light that this is a problem that needs to be addressed.

The clip that I have attached to this post is footage
I edited to the song 'Bruises' by Lewis Capaldi. It follows a young man skating and struggling to improve. His inner turmoil is represented through the stills and over lapping clips over the faster, moving shots. I didn't edit the entire footage to the  length of music because I wanted to experiment with the meaning behind my narrative and where I could take it. I wanted to represent a man who was struggling with his mental health, so I aimed to capture that within this short narrative idea. By editing the first minute I could improve on my editing skills and work on the arrangement of shots, though this is not my final film it helped with my planning and what I actually wanted to feature in the final outcome, narrative, character and shots.

,
In one section of my video I plan on using paint to leave hand marks against trees. Finger prints have negative connotations and that is something that I wanted to address within my video. The camera will focus on the top of the hand, where it will look clean, while underneath, wherever the young man touches, he leaves a mark. This is a metaphorical reference to how he is feeling, on the outside he appears normal but he is actually emotionally troubled. My actor will then turn his hands over and see the dirt. Leaving a mark against something could imply a permanent imprint, foreshadowing the ending of the video, where it ends incomplete and with no solution. In some instances my actor will not realise that he is leaving marks. They can also signify that he is leaving an imprint on something and himself but he isn't aware that he has an impact on people around him.

On the three notes I have written about the amount of time it will take to film and fill out specific posts related to my filming (call sheet, storyboard and pitch). By writing down and planning how much time it will take to organize and write up my planning means that I don't wasted any time not knowing what I'm doing.
Being organised is a key skill to have when planning for a film, it means that as a director I know the narrative and what I am looking for when filming. This will make the filming time less stressful and the actor(s) feel confident in their environment and what they are doing. Each section of my planning ranged between taking 30 mins to 2 hours per piece. I planned each section with a realistic time span to enable myself to keeping within a small and demanding time schedule, this will allow me to be organised and to finished everything productively.

One of the locations in my video will be set in dark studio with a spot light on the young mans face. This clip is a mock film of what I intend on filming. I wanted to practise the shots I am actually going to take, and to use this clip as inspiration for the real footage. The editing in this video ranges from changing the colour of the footage to speeding up/ slowing down footage and reversing footage. The slow motions add a dramatic effect to the footage, allowing the audience to view what is happening in the video for longer. Slow motion usually connotes something emotional is happening on screen, and with a cool tinted light it implies a negative and sad scene, whereas a warm light portrays a happy setting.

"Pinpointing lighting directly on specific objects or people helps persuade the viewers to direct their eyes to the intended spot, which ensures that important aspects of the video are not missed.
Lighting can also be used to add colour and texture to otherwise bland environments and scenes. The proper use of lighting can even change the way people and objects appear in the scene; they can look innocent, evil, frightening, happy, beautiful, or even ugly."

Within my music video I will feature the daily journey of a man that struggles with his emotions which reverts him into a lonely and troubled person. The footage will change and fit to the music, the story line changing and moving forwards within the different sections of the music. The clips will be filmed using two techniques; using a tripod and hand held. Using the tripod will enable me to capture still and static shots where hand held shots will enable me to move and focus the camera onto my characters face which begins to break the fourth wall where the audience will begin to feel as in they are also part of the music video.

The mood board below shows the style and atheistic of the character I will film in my video.

The photos that I researched follow the general narrative I want my music video to take. The use of water shows a mixture of meanings; the stillness of his thoughts, loneliness and torment. The other representation of water is cleanliness and, metaphorically, may represent the wanting of a clean conscience or to clean the bad thoughts. The bare back shows the raw emotion the character feels, it will also fit in with the narrative I will be creating of following the character through his daily routines. Similarly to this, the long coat and casual jumpers will be used when the character goes outside and to also symbolize the changing and overlapping days which will insinuate the repetition of his everyday life. The contrasting shots of the character outside will be made by shooting him in the dark struggling with his emotions. The written words show the process of his thoughts physically and will make the music video have a clearer narrative rather than a range of interpretations to what the film may mean or represent.

I wanted to create a timeline analysis of Sia's 'To Be Human'  because her footage can create a context for my own music video. Within her video it features clips from a film. These clips are organised in a way to create their own film and this is something that I wanted to touch on in my music video. Along with this context these clips both contrast and appose one another, not only does the lighting signify the change in area and time in the storyline, but it also falls back onto itself, repeating the same moment captured before the man goes to war, creating a non-linear storyline. This could suggest that it is the final time the main soldier spends with his lover before something inevitable will happen.
The music video opens up with a mid close up low angle shot on the mans face, cutting between that and an over the shoulder/ dirty mid shot of the same mans face in a convocation with his partner. The two clips contrast with one another, a 'before and during' the war appearance. The second time the camera switches to the first shot, the man is crying and then, for the first time the camera shot moves to his POV showing the woman he is talking to. The woman in this shot also begins to cry, a similar act happening between that shot and the previous one creating a mirroring effect and an emotion connection between the two characters. The camera also focus' on the mans face between the two shots, illuminating the colour of his eyes. The before and during shots of the war change the scenery around him, his appearance changes from clan to ragged but his eyes still stay the same.
The whole music video has a green-tint, this can have negative and dingy connotations associated with the different settings the film clips were shot in (urban, underground, abroad carnage; semantics of war).

0:00- mid close up low angle shot (dark colours)
0:03- over shoulder/ dirty shot (bright colours, looks clean)0:06- back to first shot (a before and after affect from the war)
0:09- over shoulder facing woman (same position as first shot but from males side)
0:10- cuts to first shot0:11- same as second shot, woman reaching for mans face, clips cut jaggardly to her hand moving up the side of the face (images synchronised with music)
0:17- mid shot (dark, light back ground, slightly slow motion)
0:21- close up (focus moves from mans face, blurs then focus' on background follows what the man is looking at)
0:24- wide shot, silhouette clean shot, foreshadowing that woman will drown in water
0:28- mid shot pans following man walk light in front of him
0:35- high angle mid shot slowed down pans up following the men walk away
0:47- high angle pans closer to running man and follow him
0:56 low angle extreme close up pans up to see the view the man can see moves over his head
1:08- low angle close up
1:10- mid shot side of man silhouette show motion pans into wide shot
1:23- mid shot close up 1:29- wide shot pans to mid shot
1:34- close up
1:41- low angle up towards light, follows movement from lady's eyes
1:43- close up of woman
1:45- mid shot
1:57- close up on letter, light on front
1:58- close up
2:14- everything becomes reversed
2:21- back to second shot, over shoulder mid shot
2:24- close up
2:29- mid shot (hand held)
2:45- everything reversed again, running backwards
2:47- wide shot
2:59- long shot
3:09- long shot (same position as last shot)
3:13- close up high angle
3:19- close up (repeated location)
3:22- wide shot
3:33- low angle close up
3:36- mid shot, water goes over lens (audience goes under water too)
3:40- high angle? Or in water with woman, mid shot
3:46- close up (turns into a dirty shot a hand intercepts shot to take away letters).

The mood board above highlights the conventions of pop/ soul music. I intend on using some of these ideas within my non-linear story line for my music video. Inspired by the lyrics from Lewis Capaldi's song 'Bruises', I linked my interpretation of what the song lyrically means and what the representation of love and self hate means. The idea of water is to clean the body, I intend on using this metaphor to reflect the mental health of my character by them attempting them to clean themselves of the bad thoughts.

I included pictures of people walking away from one another and someone singing in a spot light to reflect the loneliness that appears through the lyrics in 'Bruises'. This will also be mirrored in my story line because I want to create a narrative hat is influenced by the music so that my footage and song fit perfectly together. The picture of the piano stands for the style of music and the beauty that it represented through the meaning behind the song.

Choosing a location for my new narrative:

For my final music video idea the location settings have changed. The narrative follows a young man in emotional turmoil, being affected by society and the pressure of deadlines, never feeling like he can be himself.
The video will follow the character through his daily life, shooting multiple shots doing the same movement, but wearing different clothes. I will overlay the shots and change the opacity. The camera and chair will be kept in the same place and will connate a distortion in time. I will then follow the storyline with my character wearing one of the tops (from another day) from that scene through the rest of the storyline to show a change in day and the repetition of his actions. To correlate  this action I will over lay and mimic the idea for other actions. He will put his hand on a wall and I will re shoot this action multiple times and overlay it to create a mimicked and repeated movement, a possible level of OCD.
The first location is filmed within a bathroom with a big mirror, capturing his reflection and shooting multiple 'dirty' that will represent the inner turmoil he is feeling. I will follow him into the kitchen and out of the front door, standing and waiting. I will then overlay another shot where he will be standing in the same position but surrounded by traffic, this will create a contrast between the quiet and the loud surroundings but still showing that he is alone. One of my ideas is to portray a distortion of time. I do this by changing the opacity of an overlaying shot with the man standing in the bathroom and then another with him outside, the contrasting elements will portray the duration of time. He will then be followed by the camera in the same angle but in different locations. I will cut between the shots and create one movement of my actor walking forwards while his surroundings will change, this will portray his need of wanting to fit in and to signify his loneliness and separation of society.

A change in Music Video ideas

Since the post I have changed all three of my music video ideas. I had also chosen to change the song I will be filming to, which enabled me to become more receptive towards other possible ideas. Linking back to my film influences: 'To Be Human' by Sia and 'Dusk Till Dawn' by Zayn Malik featuring Sia, I wanted to structure my footage and editing in a similar way the producers for the two music videos had.
The similarity between the two is that they are both made to look like short film. Though the footage filmed for the music fits, they both have a beginning, middle and end, a structure more popularly known for footage that has a clear narrative and story line, that may have an underlying message, compared to the most recent Pop music videos like 'Bon Appetit' by Katy Perry. By choosing a different style and type of music I believe that I will be able to structure my new music video idea around a meaningful and underlying problem within society that needs to be addressed.

Within the mind map I present my ideas in a clear and structured way, by using a visual outlet to see my ideas I was able to develop and ask questions related to the possible filming ideas that I have. My base idea is that my film narrative should bring to light something that the media suppresses. I wanted to focus on the medias representation of men because social media, and media in general is an outlet where as receivers we gain and spread information, keep in contact with others and is a forum that we also learn from. When a topic is not addressed through such a huge outlet which most people rely on to gain information and use to express their own beliefs (this can be shown by polls and trending hash tags to bring awareness to a topic or to how support) and a topic is never mentioned, it begins to suppress a huge majority of people and makes others unaware of it. By creating a specific narrative for my music video I will address a wide audience and surface the lacking support men are receiving for emotional help.

In this video, a clip from Jeremy Kyle's show, the audience laugh when the man on the show had to jump off a three story building because his 'domestic' partner had locked him outside on their balcony. The response from the audience shows the outlook society has when men are belittled and lack the emotional support they need. Kyle rightly supports the man and said that if it were a woman who had to do jump from a building to escape they wouldn't be laughing.
The stereotypes associated with male dominance over-rules the underlying emotional support men also need.

This edit enabled me to develop my editing skills by using two sets of footage to make this music video. Within my previous edits I had created a narrative only using shots from one location. For my final idea I plan on using different footage and locations to create a travelling story line, this will be expressed through both stationary and moving shots. I used the footage I filmed previously of a dancer and clips from an interview with a boy to create this music video, I wanted to create a merged connection between the two men. Following the male gender I explore the weaknesses and strengths they both feel which is represented through the strong and expressive movements made by the dancer and the emotionally bound boy which is sat still in the interview. The juxtaposing movements express the image that society wants to see compared to the emotions the male may actually be experiencing. The story line is woven together by the similarity and unity of the contrasting stillness and movement.

In this clip a fellow student gives her preference of which music worked best for the footage originally filmed to 'Beautiful People' by Christ Brown to a new song 'There For You' by Martin Garrix.

I decided to film a visual feedback on the two video edits I made from the two music video edits because it provides a personal and engaging interaction between the viewer and the speaker. It allows me to compare the two edits and to either add additional clips or change the narrative slightly. I learnt that I needed to make my narrative clearer, a concept that fits with Stuart Hall's Reception Theory. With more footage and re-arranging my clips I will aim to make a clearer narrative for my music video.

Why would I use technology to provide Audio-Visual feedback?
  • More personal and conversational in nature
  • Conveys tone which can add additional context and meaning
  • Additional cues from body language if you are recording yourself
  • Contextualised by displaying and highlighting part of the students work
  • Alternative medium to text which some learners may prefer
  • Many people can talk more quickly than they can type saving them time when generating feedback

,

I created this edit to another piece of music by Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan. I wanted to edit the clips to another piece of music to see whether it could change the meaning and appearance of my music video. With 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown, I became limited to my editing and filming as the song didn't help me to express the proper context and meaning I intend on portraying within my music video. This edit follows my first pitch, second idea, only featuring clips of Dan dancing and non-professional clips to to create a 4th wall, a camera behind a camera.

Within this clip I wanted to portray a better story that worked with my footage, as mentioned above, I felt that my work was being restricted by my previous song choice as there were only a few ways that I could present my idea ina way that would fit with that song choice. I wanted to explore the different ways that I could present my idea for my music video and how it can be interpreted differently because of the layout and positioning of the clips. With other filmed clips I will create a second version of this music video that will feature other footage. This will create a different context within the video with a possible use of voice overs.
When I film my linear storyline I will re edit and follow through with my third idea with featuring a linear storyline along side the choreographed piece.

Idea 1 and 2 Edits

Idea 1:
This is the final clip following my developing ideas for the story line I should pursue with the song 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown.
Although the music video is unfinished, I wanted to edit and create footage that would last for a certain amount of time so that I could see what the majority what the story line and footage would have turned out to look like.

Idea 2:
This is the final footage of my finished music video regarding the dancer and camera behind a camera idea. When filming I used a speaker to play the music aloud, this way my dancer could freestyle to the music in time which made it easier for me to link together the footage to the downloaded music. Although I will not follow through with this concept, the video was successful and has enabled me to develop my ideas further.

Filming Day Review

I constructed my first day of filming on the 27th July 2017, during this date I completed the dancing section to my music video at a recently made basketball court in Adderbury. I chose to film on this day because I needed to work around my dancer and the days he was free. I chose the week, which I was free throughout, and asked Dan what days and times worked best for him as he works at multiple places and also for himself. I could only film (along with my best friend Millie helping with the filming) on the Thursday because, like mentioned above, it was a day that suited both Dan and Millie. I had estimated that the filming would take at least 3 hours to capture (time would have differed if I didn't have a second camera also filming) and forward planned by making sure the weather was dry and sunny.
Forward planning for this filming day demonstrated to me that working around other peoples timings and aiming for a specific day was a necessary thing to do. This showed that I was professional by pre-planning the day and what I wanted to film. On this day I filmed with two cameras to not only save time (as we wouldn't need to re film the same part of the dance from another angle) but to capture shots that might have been missed if I had to re shoot again.
My friend Millie helped me with the filming, she has followed through with Media at college and with being in most of her coursework and having a friendship for years, I knew that her style of filming would create a differentiation throughout my work and that was something that I wanted to portray in the dancing film. Having a difference in lighting and focus gives the shots more character.

The day ran smoothly, I filmed plenty of footage that enabled me to experiment with the layout on 'Premiere' to marry two clips together or to see which clips worked together. I created three different clips that were either the final or secondary edits for that part of my coursework. I then adapted my three ideas that bounced off from the initial footage of the dancer and followed through with two of them with the footage I made to create a more context bound final film as I had practiced my editing skills within the 2 of the three ideas I pitched about a week previously.

These attached sheets are my Call Sheet for the first part of music video. Having a Call Sheet helped with the specific things about this section of my music video; the reasons why I chose the locations, things about the dancer and roughly how long the filming would take. I have written about my dancer, Daniel Brown, and the times and dates I filmed. I wanted to fill out the separate call sheets for the choreography and the linear storyline because there are different people and locations/ days that everything is being filmed. Although there will be a link between the two sets (choreography and linear storyline, which will be myself) the two sections are separate, so I will be filling out a separate Call Sheet for this.

Planning: Props

For my music video I won't be needing any specific props, above are pictures of the camera and tripod I will be using to film along side a second camera from Nikon, which will also help me to capture the same shot that is being filmed from another perceptive instead of having to re shoot what is happening to then retake the  When I filmed the choreography part to my music video I brought along a speaker to play the music out of which not only helped Dan (the dancer) to hear what he was dancing to, but would mean that I could here which part of the music Dan was dancing too when it came down to editing.

To the left are screenshots from the clips I have filmed already of the dancing choreography showing Dans clothing. I chose dark clothing for Dan because not only does it contrast with the brightness of the background but when he dances the dark movement will attract the audiences attention. His clothing is also fashionable, matching tight black trousers with a printed black and white top, grey trainers and a gold neckless, something also seen being worn by other hip hop dancers.

Within the linear narrative storyline that I will feature within my music video I will use skateboards and capture close ups and action shots of them being used in skate ramps. I chose skateboards as a prop and to be one of the main featured props used I the story because it will link the narrative with the dancing choreography through the retro locations they will and are filmed in/at (a basket ball court and at a skate ramps). The linear storyline will follow a trip with a group of friends starting off at a train station, the journey towards the skate ramps, clips at the skate ramps which will be the most featured within the storyline and then the trip back.

Organising: Text Messages
For one of my film ideas I wanted to film footage so that I could edit to the song 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown. By organising a time and day with the dancer I wanted to film with, I was able to easily construct a plan for both of us that would work successfully.

Hey Claud, it's Daniel, hope you're well.
The week of the 24th is fine with me.
You're the director, so I'll do my best to help you complete your vision. I'll do some choreographed movement linked with some freestyle aswell.
Daniel

Hey Dan, I'm not too bad a little stressed about mocks as they're the ones going on future applications and my ballet exam, but hopefully everything will go well
I'll message you again closer to the time and I'm so glad you're up for it and all ready onto it, Claud

Hey Dan time flies! Next week is the one we were looking at and I have some times and dates for you for when I'm free: Monday 9-3, Tuesday 2-6 pm, Thursday and Friday (any time) - Let me know what works best for you! For the day, wear what you normally would when teaching a class I'm not fussed.
Let me know your thoughts on venues (nothing too mirror covered if an idea is at Bannatyne's as I'll be seen in the reflection) thanks, Claud

Hey dan I don't know if you've replied because a text hasn't come through (?). Mum said you were free on Thursday can you give me more info please, thanks, Claud

Hey Claud! Sorry i thought I replied! But yes time does fly! Thursday is the best day for me, hope that's ok for you. In terms of venue, what would be your ideal environment?
Daniel

Hey dan so I've had another epiphany, if you can get to mine by 11 and we can go to the Lucy Placket in Adderbury, by the church and library. In the field there's a basket ball court which is a modern design with a solid floor (everything ideal for you dancing). It's going to supposedly start raining by 12 so we'll work quickly.

That sounds like a good idea Claud! I have a grey ford. I will see you at yours for 11! Any desires you have for outfit?

Just all black, sports/dance/fashionable clothing, your own interpretation is absolutely fine. My mate millie does media at College (me at sixthform) and her camera creates a different affect to mine, I've gotten her to help me film which could mean we wrap up quicker, is it possible to have one more passenger in your car for the few mins drive to Lucy Placket?  She'll arrive at my house before you so don't need to worry about picking anyone up from random places, see you soon

Within these text messages I have managed to easily manage a time and place with the dancer and choreographer Dan to enable us to meet so that I can collect footage for my coursework (used in ideas two and three). By being organised and precise about times and meeting places it enabled myself, Millie and Dan to get together and have everything we needed to film.

The first time I messaged Dan was at the end of May, giving him the date and week I intended on filming a couple of months previously so that he could keep the week free. When it came closer to the week I intended to film with Dan I contacted him again proposing that the week I had planned to film with him was the first week of my summer holiday so I was malleable to work around Dans dates and times that would fall within that week.

Within my final product I am aiming to film some choreographed sections which will feature in different parts of the music video (main chorus' and a few verses) both professional and non clips will be used. I wanted to feature choreography because not only is it a unique concept used in music videos but also creates a better visual for the audience to follow and to be entertained by as every dance is unique in style and choreography.
The mind map underneath portrays the general outfit and atheistic I want the dancer to be featured wearing in the dancing part of my music video. The clothes fit a hip-hop/ modern style which  correlates with the style/ genre of 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown.
One of my other ideas for the music video is to follow a linear storyline, there is no need for casting in this part of the music video, as even though there will be organised trips to film this section of the music video, the amount of people (one a group and the other less then two people to make more personal clips) will vary. Although I will have to have a sheet signed to show that I have their permission to want to be featured in my music video, the specific gender or amount of people or what they have to wear isn't specific as everything is meant to look as natural as possible and not staged.

Depending on where I might film and the people featured in the clips their clothing appearance/ dress will differ from other clips and what other people in the clips will wear. The individuality and variety of clothing and fashion is something that I also want to capture in my filming because it is a way of someone to express themselves, both their inner and outer beauty which ties in with the theme of the song.

Initial Idea 3
Idea 3:
This idea bounces off Idea 2, using both the choreography filmed of Dan at a basketball court and the non-professional clips filmed by a secondary camera, which shows myself and Millie filming in and out of takes, this creates a more personal style of filming and editing.
Aside from the dancing clips, there will be a linear story line following through the music video, I will include both professional and non-professional clips with Dan along with the professional clips following the storyline in and out of context to create the third person narrative.

  • Professional dance clips.
  • A linear story line following a dance choreography.
  • The colour will be made more saturated and brighter.
  • Linear story line will follow a journey of traveling (a theme used in the original edit of 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown) and will (and idea) end up at a skate park, which will link the locations between the dancer and the story line.
In the footage below, I have linked clips of some of the choreography created by the dancer. The clip on the left is a static mid shot, capturing the movement of the dancer jumping a twist movement in the air. Contrary to this clip, the footage on the right shows the camera is moving with the dancer in a smooth and controlled hold while capturing the dancer moving downwards. The opposing hold on the camera (static and moving) will separate the flow on the music video.

Initial Idea 2
Concept 2:
The second concept I might follow up for my music film to 'Beautiful People' by Chris Brown, is one that follows the organisation and professional filming of a dancer and his choreography. Within July, myself and a friend that has been studying media throughout her GCSE's and into College helped me film a choreographed/free styled piece, danced by a professional hip-hop, freestyle dancer, Dan.
Our set up was in a modern day basketball court, I chose this place as it has a wide, symmetrical backdrop that gives the affect of a popularly used, but hidden away public area. I wanted to contrast between the modern design and a popular sport that has been around for years. With dark colours and a worn orange wall mount and hoop as a backdrop it creates a retro feel. Dan is wearing dark fashionable clothing which fits in with current trends (2017).

  • Clips will show professional and non professional clips of Dan dancing. This will follow the concept of the music video: showing the development of the film.
  • Enhance the colour on the professionally filmed clips, this will separate the two sets of footage.
  • Sharp changes between each clip and footage will work with the rhythm beat of music.
  • Possible use of audio from clips to create a difference between the non/professional clips.
  • General outcome will be a dancing video that follows the concept of a camera behind a camera, this will create a duel narrative within my music video.

These are two clips that will be used for both the professional and non-professional filming footage. The top clip shows the dancer swinging on a bar, though out of character from the dance choreography, the camera follows the momentum of his body moving which will create a contrasting effect between the still shots on the dancer dancing and the non-professional clips.

The second clip is a takeaway shot following the dancer entering the basketball court. This is filler footage and will feature slightly later in the music video to portray the development of the filming and how the dancer came to be in the basket ball court.
Because of the blue metal and greenery surrounding the basketball court, the footage has a natural darker tone to it. I relied on natural lighting which effected the lightness of the footage.

Planning: Initial Idea 1

Idea 1:
Splits between two story lines, one would be following my family around London (a day out) which will then cut between that footage and one from a party, I will create a jagged effect with the party, overlaying blue filters on top to separate the two story lines.
The music video will start off by following family around in London, using fillers such as monuments and feet walking. I will bring in aspects of the party, and then throughout music video the party scenes will gradually grow and appear more often until the three-quarters of the way through the music video will be all about the party.

  • The clips will work and change with the beat of the music.
  • Opens with mother and daughter, portraying general beauty standards.
  • Follows family around London.
  • Darker clips of party will feature, some of the footage would be sped up.
This first clip is footage from the party scene, this footage has a cool-tone which makes the clip appear darker. The focus in this clip follows the movement of the boy, enabling the focus for the viewer to look at the boy and his action of raising a glass rather than to his surroundings.
The second footage from the part shows a wide shot that captures a movement. Contrary to the footage previously which was a still shot, the movement from this clips begins to create a narrative for the party scenes by showing the characteristics of the people in the story line. This footage also has a blue-ish tint which coincides with the footage previously, linking the area of the clips and the people together.

The bottom two clips is footage that will be used for the opening of my music video. I overlay the two clips when the hand movements cross over at the same point. I film my mum easily sliding on the lipstick and cut to myself smudging it across my face. This movement represents the in-just belief that women need or have to use makeup. The change in people for the footage also portrays the generation change and therefor the change in views of beauty standards and what is and isn't accepted.

For part of my music video I wanted to include a dance choreography. I began to make ideas and plan on what could fit in well with a R&B/ soul theme (which is the genre of the music I will be filming for).
I chose to film the dance choreography at a basket ball court which is both a retro and modern in design.
Part of my location will feature the dancer, filmed at the basket ball court in Adderbury and the rest of the clips will feature a linear storyline following a group of people from Banbury to Oxford where there is a skate park and I will film them at the ramps. At these ramps I will be able to capture close up, in and out of focus shots and slow motion action shots which will help to represent my genre of music and will tie in with my first location, being at a basket ball court.
The linear storyline throughout the music video will feature the movement of the trains, professional still shots and less professional-take out of character- styled clips. The storyline will also feature shots of me filming or walking with the group as one of the main ideas for the music video is for it to un-intentionally follow myself filming and also being in the 'moment' other than just being behind the camera (a camera within a camera concept).

LONDON

Taking a day out and doing research for my Art A-level I also did a location recce and found this underground skate park that has been used for over a decade. I talked to the men skating at the time and they said that they had visited this place everyday for eight years, showing that it is not only a social area but popularly used. Although I wont do any filming at this place in London, the framed and slightly secluded spray painted area is a picturesque area which would be a great place to visit again to take more pictures of and to possibly capture some practise footage.

Planning: Narrative Specific Mood board

Although I have created a mood board on my genre specific, I wanted to make another one focusing on the possible narrative that my music video could take. The pictures I researched represent my genre specific (R&B/ soul) and are a huge influencer for the narrative for my music video as I want to incorporate the genre of music with the style of filming and what could be featured in the clips.

Planning- Introducing Main Task

The OCR specification listed a wide variety of choice for our A2 coursework, from making a music video to a newspaper; visual and physical options. For this piece of coursework I have chosen to create a music video, supporting this idea by also creating an album cover and magazine advertisement.
Last year for my AS coursework I was working with another person, while this year I have decide to work by myself. I chose this path for myself as I felt that last year I could have improved more if I had worked individually, as there would have been more one on one lessons with my teacher rather than figuring things out with my partner and only relying on each other. By working with myself this year, I can develop my organisational skills and independence off from what I learned last year. Having a partner for my AS coursework pushed me to increase my organisational skills as not only did I have to figure out times and dates for myself and my partner to meet up, but also for the person we were filming with, which only created a small and specific amount of time we could ever film between.

Last year for my AS coursework I filmed a two minute opening to my film, I didn't want to carry out with that idea and I have chosen (mentioned above) to film for a music video. I chose this medium because I can personally relate more to a music video than a short film or two minute opening to a film. When choosing the music to film for I had to keep multiple things in mind; how many people I would want to film with/ who is more possibly available to feature in whatever I film, will it follow a linear story line? I did some research and watched allot of music videos with ranging genres to see how the artists interpreted their own music and how they wanted tot portray it. The content varied from showing a linear story, some featuring and others not the artist, just being a dance video and others featuring allot of metaphorical meanings.
With multiple different influencers I began to get an idea for what content I might want to feature in my future music video. With music the meaning can be interpreted in different ways, while with a film it is very structural and 'one routed'.

From last years final product I have improved my editing and filming skills I did this by filming and organizing extra trips with my family to London, parties and skate parks. Alongside this  I used online footage, such as dance choreography's and other clips used in non copy-written music videos, to practice my editing by make my own music videos through the editing platfrom 'Premiere'.
Unlike last year, I am using two cameras to film any footage, this not only helps me in collecting more footage but enables me to save time and practicality.

Ancillary 1- Digipak Design

I have chosen to create an Album Cover for my first ancillary because it will allow me to create a 'face' for my music video. With album covers an artist is able to create a unique piece that will cover the whole meaning of their album, or of something that represents themselves. Examples of this is  Beyonce's most recent album release, only consisting of a side angle of Beyonce looking down, her face masked by her arm with the title 'Lemonade' overlapped on top, while The Weeknd for his album 'Starboy' uses bold contrasting graffiti colours (red, blue, yellow and black) which are also colours that follow him throughout his music videos for this album, creating an on-going theme for him.

Current Inspirations:

Ancillary 2- Poster Advertisement for the Digipak

I want to design a Magazine Advertisement for my music video because it will help to develop my skills in designing. One of my other A-Levels is Art, and for work experience I have designed three prototype websites for the fashion company which went really successfully. Like the Album Cover, designing a magazine advertisement for the album will allow me to present the way I want to portray the album/ song to the public.
To design a layout and look for the final product I need to start planning for all of the content in the actual music video so that I can decide on colours and themes that will be used for the magazine advertisement as it would have to be a running theme throughout the music video/ album.
